SCM Tuning Project Alpha - (626) Part II

Here we are at phase #2 in the SCM Tuning project. In this update, the catback exhaust and race muffler were installed. Now not having any tools to cut and weld pipe, I needed to have the setup made from scratch, ‘truly’ custom. I went over to mufflers for less and had them hack off the itty stock system (2″) and weld up stainless 2.5″ tubing all the way out the back. Then they rigged up custom hangers and put the RS Type on nice and tight.

With the new catback in place, the engine roared to life when I cranked her up (literally roared!) The system was noticably louder but since they put in a fre-flow resonator, it wasn’t nasty loud. There’s a nice deep rumble at start up but then it not even as loud as a pair of Flowmasters. When you get on the throttle below 40mph, it’s roaring pretty good but once you get up top, you canjust make it out.

Performance

The first thing to notice is a bit of low end torque is gone, but this is always expected and you gain it back later in the mod cycle. However, the top end is “greatly” improved. The engine pulls from 80-100 like it does from 30-60 and will keep going! Again, no Dyno numbers but the SOP dyno says that there are at least 8 ponies gained from this which is conservative and in line with typical gains from a performance cat/catback combo.

Result:

Base: 152whp (est)

Gain: +8

Total: 160whp (est)
