The Car: 2000 Mazda 626 ES-V6 ATX

Specs:

Engine: 2.5L 24V DOHC V6 w/VRIS (Variable Resonance Intake System)

Power: 170hp @ 6250rpm (approx. 150whp)

Torque: 164ft-lbs @ 4250rpm

Displacement: 2450cc

Bore & Stroke: 3.24(in) x 3.13(in)

Compression: 9.7:1

0-60: 9.4s

1/4 Mile: 17.41 @ 81mph

Weight: 3100lbs

Goal:

The goal of this project is to get the car over 200whp with only natural aspiration. Mazda’s engineering of the KL series engine found in the 626 and MX-6 (also used by ford in the Probe GT) is highly efficient and their use of resonant tuning on this motor makes the 626 a very quick car for a “non-sport” sedan. Stock they run 16’s on the quater mile which is only about 2 seconds slower than a Mustang 4.6L V-8!! Not too shabby. So basically, by increasing power output from 141whp to 200whp, the net performance effect will be higher because the car was designed to perform at a much lower power level.

Think of you putting on a 20lb backpack and going for a hike or a jog. You will move pretty slow until your body is conditioned for the weight. Let’s assume this is 1mph and your normal pace is 3mph. Once you are conditioned, at that point, the pack will not be hindering you and you will be able to move at a normal pace (3mph). Now you going on a weight and cross-training regimen and increase your overall body strength and primarily your lower body strength. The same 20lb pack now feels like 10lbs or less and you are able to move faster that before (6+mph). Our project will accomplish the same thing with all of the tuning we will perform. Next is the first mods to the car.
