Countyline Dragway now open
It’s about damn time….
Someone had to put 2+2 together eventually. Fast cars + No track = Street Racing. It’s as simple an equation as any grade school problem. Sure South Florida has race tracks. Homestead Speedway’s 1/8th mile strip (that’s hardly available due to the constant flow of events) way down past SW 312th and Speeway Blvd. Or there’s Moroso Motosports Park all the way in Palm Beach off PGA Blvd. It’s a full 1/4 mile but, they only have open drag events once or twice a month and for most Dade residents, it’s an hour plus drive to maybe get 2 passes down the 1320. Not worth it for most. Immokalee has a 1/8 track but that’s also 1-1/2 drive for most and it’s truly out in BFE. With options like that, no wonder you meet your friends in some warehouse district, line ‘em up, run, and get home in time for Leno.
Ah, but street racing is illegal. A wonderful 316.191 conviction which is nasty thing on your record. (read the law here) Enter County Line Dragway in Miami. Yes, I said Miami! Thanks to a hero by the name of Peter Scalzo who contributed some of his own money and convinced the County Comissioner to sign over the old Opa-Locka West airfield which was converted into a track. While we have not visited the track yet, we have been advised that it is very nice and worth the $20 entrant fee to run your car ($10 to watch). You can read about the opening day at the Herald online.
Details:
Opa-locka West Airport at Krome Avenue and U.S. 27.
Weekend racing 11 a.m. to 4 p.m (subject to change)
